The other direction is bringing the stories upfront where I can cycle them so that the home page is always new. The framework of the website should just be a very simple vehicle for showing the story content. The ability to access all of the stories with just one click is important. The fun design will be in creating the stories themselves.

I like this direction very much, visually speaking. The photos here are very intriguing and the titles also have much potential for fun.
I wonder how you can build the basic wireframe for this site, thinking about how people will navigate and such. Will it be a linear narrative, or can we pick and choose according to our impulses? Find your own adventure? Where does each click take us?
